Investigations into ex-AG Tommy Thomas will clear the air over Sulu heirs’ demand to seize Malaysia’s multibillion Ringgit assets overseas

On 30 Sept 2022, Prime Minister Dato’ Sri Ismail Sabri informed that Pakatan-appointed ex-Attorney  General Tan Sri Tommy Thomas will be investigated for sedition, among others, over various allegations made in his memoirs, My Story: Justice in the Wilderness.

As the latter will also be probed under Section 8 of the Official Secrets Act (OSA), Section 23 of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act and Sections 124(1) and 203A of the Penal Code, this is an opportunity for the authorities to obtain all information for accuracy and transparency, while Tommy may likewise clear the air over his role leading to the Court of Arbitration ruling against Malaysia.

Given the determination by the heirs of the defunct Sulu Sultan to seize Malaysia’s assets in The Netherlands to enforce a US$15 billion (around RM62.59 billion) arbitration award against Sabah, Wanita MCA Sabah urges all Malaysians to fully support the assurance by Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Dato’ Seri Wan Junaidi Tuanku Wan Jaafar that “Malaysia will spare no expense in defending its sovereignty and its assets abroad wherever they may be situated.”

All these conundrums would not have taken root if Tommy had not written a groveling letter to the lawyers of the Sulu heirs apologising for Malaysia’s stoppage of cession monies from 2013 to 2019 and was “now ready and willing” to reinstate the RM5,300 payments inclusive of 10% interest totaling RM48,300.

Moreover, Tommy’s letter did not seem to have been made “without prejudice.” This suggests that his letter could be used as evidence in court without the consent of the parties concerned. The Sulu descendants appear have seized on this opportunity leveraging on Tommy’s letter to file their demands against Malaysia’s sovereignty.

While the three Warisan MPs ie former Sabah Chief Minster Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal, former Deputy Home Minister Azis Jamman and former Deputy MESTECC Isnaraissah Munirah Majilis claim to be clueless over Tommy’s letter, it is now up to the BN-led government to clean up the mess created by Pakatan.
